Museum Ideas 2018 International Conference: Embedding Narratives of Dissent

“A conference for mind expanding conversations and international networking with a platform for shared discussions” – Martin Payne, The British Museum

Museum Ideas 2018 was the seventh edition of our annual international conference. It took place on 2-4 October 2018 at the National Maritime Museum and the Museum of London. A full day of practical workshops was followed by an exclusive study day at the National Maritime Museum. Royal Museums Greenwich has just undertaken a dynamic journey in the development and delivery of their Endeavour Project. New galleries explored how women and men ventured beyond Britain’s shores to explore the ends of the earth in a quest for knowledge, riches, power and adventure from the late fifteenth century onwards. Visitors to the new galleries not only discover how people and cultures encountered in the past were irrevocably changed by this contact, but also how Britain was and continues to be transformed by this process. Delegates discovered the process and outcomes of co-curation, collaborative working and new approaches to community research. The main conference took place the next day and was chaired by Tony Butler.

Speakers included:

Linda Brogan, playwright / Excavating The Reno community project
Katrina Lashley, Program Coordinator, Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum, Washington, D.C.
