Develop the skills, tools and a practical framework to lead EDI in your museum. Find out more in this in-person study day.
If you are working on EDI in a museum, it can feel like you are holding everything at once – access, inclusion, protected characteristics, anti-racist practice, decolonisation, lived experience, staff wellbeing, legal duties, political headwinds, board and funder expectations, community needs – all sitting in different plans, owned by different people, on a budget that doesn’t stretch. It feels too much, not because you lack commitment, but because nothing is laid out clearly in one place.
Up until recently, inclusion work usually began with action – a statement, a project, a new programme – and only afterwards reached the harder questions – why is this work being delivered here, for what intended outcome, why now, who is it for, and what evidence are we using. When the work starts in this sequence with actions first, it tends to stall or sit in one team rather than across the organisation or lose momentum, or worse, cause harm.
Reversing this, we put the work in order. Instead of treating access, inclusion, EDI, anti-racist practice and decolonisation as separate demands, we lay them out as one clear sequence, so you can see where everything sits and how the pieces build on each other rather than restarting every year.
This study day will help you design inclusive practice bespoke to your organisation.
Together, we will:
• Bring all of your current commitments, projects and plans into an ordered approach, so you can see the whole picture
• Work through a museum case study, or your own, to sequence the work – why it matters here, what’s getting in the way, how to set the ground safely, what evidence to use, and which tools and frameworks to bring in and when
• Build your own practical framework as the day goes, turning your thinking into a handbook that lives inside your planning cycles, board reporting and governance so the work is embedded in how the organisation runs, not held by one person or team
By the end of the day, you will be able to:
• See your organisation’s inclusive practice narrative as one ordered picture instead of separate strands
• Lead EDI with clarity – knowing who is responsible for what, how decisions are made, and which tools and frameworks to use at each stage
• Decide what to prioritise next and explain those choices confidently to boards, funders, staff and communities.
• Understand how to use evidence (data and lived experience) to build your rationale for these choices
• Leave with a handbook and a concrete first step that links directly into your next planning cycle and board reporting, so inclusion work is embedded and builds year on year
This study day is for museum directors, heads of department, programme and engagement leads, and people with responsibility for EDI, anti-racist practice or decolonisation – anyone who is shaping inclusion work.
