Explore the guiding principles for effective climate interpretation in museums and consider how these can be applied in practice and embedded within organisational strategy.

This study day examines the unique role that cultural and heritage organisations can play in helping audiences engage with climate narratives – not only by increasing understanding, but also by creating pathways towards meaningful conversations and action.

Led by interpretation specialist Anna Ravenscroft, you’ll learn through a combination of case studies from across the museums and heritage sector and interactive activities that support participants to reflect on their own institutional context. Together, participants will begin to develop a distinct ‘climate voice’ through interpretation, rooted in their collections, audiences, and values.

Anna works on the Wellcome Discovery research project Melting Metropolis, which uncovers urban experiences of extreme heat and takes a narrative justice approach to informing policy and shaping change. She has also worked with the Natural History Museum on two projects exploring how interpretation can help create ‘advocates for the planet’. The principles shared in this session were first developed for Arts Council England’s The Herds project and continue to evolve through ongoing practice.

Anna Ravenscroft has delivered award-winning interpretation for major galleries at the Imperial War Museums and the Science Museum, and has worked with organisations including the Natural History Museum, National Portrait Gallery and Barts Health NHS Trust Archives.
