Job: Director, The Weald & Downland Living Museum

The Weald & Downland Living Museum: “An absolutely fascinating outdoor museum”*. Could you lead it?

We are an award winning, internationally recognised Living Museum located in 40 acres of the beautiful South Downs National Park. Our Museum Collection comprises over 50 historic buildings, gardens and an artefact collection which, together, bring to life the working lives, homes, farmsteads, and rural industries of the region over the 13th to the 19th centuries. We attract around 150,000 visitors each year with daily visitors, exciting events and a programme of learning opportunities. Our stunning Gateway entrance galleries and waterside café were opened last Spring.

We are looking for a Museum Director to lead the next exciting chapter in our future. The Director’s focus will be on safeguarding the cultural heritage of the Weald & Downland Living Museum whilst realising its income potential; utilising the opportunities presented by Gateway and raising our national and international profile.

As Museum Director and our Chief Executive, you will need to be a communicator and a people-person with the drive, empathy and inspirational qualities to align the 60 full and part-time staff and more than 400 volunteers in continuing to provide a world-class visitor experience, lifelong learning opportunities and the pursuit of scholarship. The role will suit an experienced leader with excellent people and communication skills, gravitas, energy and the ability to work collaboratively. A proven team leader, the post-holder will bring sound commercial acumen and will be a strategic and innovative thinker. A passion for the heritage and cultural sectors and an appreciation of vernacular architecture are essential; related experience is desirable.

If you feel you have the attributes and experience to successfully lead us into the future, you can apply or download further information for the role here: https://candidates.perrettlaver.com/vacancies/775/museum_director/

The closing date for applications is 9am (GMT) on Tuesday, 1st May 2018.

The salary is commensurate with the seniority of the role and the role is based at the Weald & Downland Living Museum in the South Downs National Park.
